Citing Your Research

How do you cite sources?

There are two important conventions researchers use when citing sources. Both are necessary to indicate all the sources you used, and in which parts of your own work you included references.

Footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references are references to specific ideas, facts, data, opinions, or quotes within your paper.

A bibliography, or list of works cited, is a complete list ofall the sources you used in your research, even if you don't cite anything specific from every source you used in your paper.

Although creating the bibliography and notes is usually the last step of writing a paper, it is essential that you keep careful records throughout your research process so that you can properly document your sources. Word processing programs make it easy to create footnotes as you write.
