Refining your topic

Refining your topic is an ongoing process. As you define your research question, focus on particular aspects of the topic, and continue to locate more information, you may need to modify your topic several times.

Think about how much information you need for your research project. It's important to pick a topic that is "doable".

Are you overwhelmed by the amount of information available? You may need to narrow your topic.
Can't find enough information? You may need to broaden your topic.

Tips to refine your topic:

identify a specific population, geographic area or time period.
choose a subfield of your discipline or topic.
