Selecting a topic

You may already have a general idea of the subject area or topic you want to research, or you may still be looking for a topic. Either way, here are some tips for how to pick a topic:

Select a topic that interests you.
Review the course syllabus to see what topics your course will cover.
Look at materials your professor may have placed on reserve for the course.
Discuss possible ideas with your professor.
Browse scholarly journals or books in the general area of interest.
Read up on possible topics in a general or a specialized encyclopedia, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
