This article is included as part of an issue devoted to: Approaches to Library Instruction in Art and Architecture. Library training in humanistic disciplines, such as art history, should address a variety of matters, which demonstrate how libraries support research. Purposes a collaborative, collegial relationship, rather than that of student-teacher, argues that this approach is suitable for introducing undergraduates to research in art history, and describes specific topics librarians may choose to address. The Fine Arts Department at Dickinson College, Pennsylvania, offers an Art Historical Methods Seminar to all senior students. An integral part of the course is an introduction to the principle bibliographic tools in art historical research. Students are introduced to printed sources and online databases and the learned skills are used to research artists and their works for an exhibition of selected works from the college's art gallery.
