Who should teach?

Speaking across the curriculum programs pose an inherent challenge.  Faculty without specialized backgrounds in either traditional public speaking or communication competency instruction are expected to teach these skills with limited opportunities for training.  This is an issue that the college must continue to grapple with. i  (There is some research on this topic, a sample of which is linked here.)  Regular workshops, as well as resource persons to help one-on-one both in the development of courses and for help on an adhoc basis are now available.  Moreover, any number of faculty in the divisions already have communication competency teaching skills that go by other names.  These faculty need to be recognized for these abilities and encouraged to make  them salient in some of their courses.  Other faculty can learn limited skill sets that can be applied in specific course situations.
